Now, more than
ever, people are exercising as a way to stay fit in both mind
and spirit. USATF – Long Island encourages a healthy lifestyle
by promoting Track & Field as a sport for people of all ages.
USATF – LI provides many opportunities for Masters Athletes (35
years old and over) to participate. Masters compete in 5 year
age groups (35 – 39, 40 – 44, etc…).
Whether you are just starting out, a recreational runner or
competing in World Championships, there is a USATF – LI event
for you. USATF – LI organizes several track meets throughout the
winter, spring and summer where athletes can run, jump and throw
against others their own age. Also, in cooperation with USATF
sanctioned races, USATF – LI holds both a road racing and
cross-country grand prix where athletes compete in 5 year age
groups, (Masters begins at age 40) and earn points based on
their performances. To see prior results for track & field, road
running and cross-country please click on the links located on
the left.
In addition to the physical improvement in their lives, Masters
Athletes enjoy the camaraderie of their fellow competitors. Many
Masters Athletes join clubs. Clubs offer training tips and
partners as well as providing motivation and support. There are
also many opportunities for the clubs to compete as teams
against each other. There are many clubs on Long Island for road
and distance runners as well as some clubs that specialize in
track & field. For a listing of some of the clubs on Long Island
click on the Related Links tab on the left. You can also find
members of these clubs at most running events on Long Island.

Track!!
Our Masters Chair, Sue Nesbihal-Cordero featured in an article
Long Island Masters Athletes
score on National and International scene
Long Island was well
represented in Boston at the 2010 National Indoor Track and
Field Championship. Our local athletes posted fine performances
and several placed.
Among the athletes
were:
Edmund Joyce
73, 1st place in super weight throw, 4th in weight
throw and 6th in shot-put;
Keith Butler 42, First place Shot, third in both weight and
super weight throws;
Kim Touya 33, 1st in 60m
hurdles, 2nd in 60m and 200m;
Sean Duford (35+) 3rd in
60m, 2nd in 200m;
Rick Lapp 60, 3rd in 200m
and 400m.
USATF-Long Island stalwart
Caryl Senn-Griffith was 1st in the pentathlon.
Kathy Martin was 1st in 3000m, 1 mile and
800m. She was also part of an American record 4x800 relay team.
Joe Cordero was 7th in the mile and 4th
in the 3000m. His 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams scored gold.
Mary Trotto had a typical meet competing and scoring in
numerous events. Mary 63 was 1st in shot put,
pentathlon and the 4x400 relay, 2nd in triple jump,
3rd in 1 mile run and 5th in 200m.
A fine showing for our
athletes on the National Level of competition.
Several athletes also
competed on the world stage at the World Masters Association
Indoor Track and Field Championships in Kamloops Canada March
1-5. Our contingent was led by many time World Champion Kathy
Martin who did not disappoint. Kathy won the 8k
(55) cross country race and led the U.S. team to a 1st
place finish. She easily won the 800m and 3000m. The 1500m was
billed as a duel of the Titans as Kathy faced off against
Maureen De St. Croix Canada’s best who had broken Kathy’s
age 50 record. The home crowd was going crazy until the 6th
lap when Kathy took the lead and beat De St. Croix by 10
seconds!!(5:24.34 to 5:34.61)
Joe Cordero ran with
a strong stride after a year of injury but his conditioning
betrayed him as he placed 6th in 1500m and 5th
in the 3000m. Joe ran a strong 8k cross country with a
needed 8th place finish which helped his 70 year old
US team grab the team silver medal!!
Of course Mary Trotto
performed her usual magic and was all over the facility
competing. Mary and her 60 year old 4x200 relay team took
3rd place. In addition Mary was 4th in
Javelin, 200m, and pole vault. She was 5th in pent,
High Jump, and 7th in Triple jump.
Sue Nesbihal Cordero gained
a 5th place in Javelin.
The 2009 Masters Track & Field athletes were honored at the 2010
annual USATF-LI brunch. The male winners were Marc Nesbitt
(under 60) and Abe Bernstein (60 & over). Marc has proven to be
a very versatile runner, running quality races in distances from
55m to 1500m. In his specialty, the 800m, Marc can be seen
taking on and defeating all comers including HS and open
runners. In 2009 Marc competed at the Masters Indoor
Championships and placed 3rd in the M40-44 800m in a USATF-LI
record time of 2:05.72. Marc also was a member of the 2nd Wind
TC team that took 3rd place in the Masters 4 x 400m relay at the
Millrose games in 3:43.26. In 2009 Abe Bernstein dominated the
400m and 800m. Abe won both events at the Empire State Senior
Games. He then placed third in M70-74 in both events at the
National Senior Games in California. Abe ran 1:12.18 for the
400m and a USATF-LI record 2:46.80 for the 800m.
The under 60 female award was shared by Caryl Senn-Griffiths and
Kathy Martin. Kathy continued her dominance of the middle and
long distance races by winning W55-59 Masters Indoor National
Championships at 800m (2:40.02), one mile (5:44.24) and 3000m
(10:59.36). Outdoors Kathy was national champion at 1500m
(5:22.93), 5000m (19:46.47), 10000m (40:04.03) and the 2000m
steeplechase (8:26.86). Caryl (W45-49) showed off her all around
athletic talent by winning national championships in the
pentathlon at both the indoor and outdoor Masters National
Championships. Indoors Caryl also placed first in the 60m
hurdles (10.37) and the high jump (4’8”). She won outdoor
national titles in the 80m hurdles (14.46), 400m hurdles
(1:12.07), high jump (4’8”), long jump (14’) and javelin
(110’8”). The 60 & over female athlete of 2009 was Mary Trotto.

also placed first in the 300m hurdles (1:25.10), 2000m
steeplechase (11:54.18), high jump (3’5”), long jump (8’4”),
triple jump (19’) and pole vault (3’11”).

We Are Athlete’s Joan Gerold was nominated in the 60-64 year old

for Bill in 2010!!!
Kathy Martin was named both the Track and Field Athlete and Long
Distance Runner of the Year for age 55-59. In addition she was
3rd for Master’s Athlete of the Year behind Colleen De Reuck and
